Definition

A cryptoasset is a digitally represented asset that uses cryptography and distributed-ledger systems for issuance, ownership records, transfer, or application access.

In market context

The category includes structurally different instruments such as native blockchain coins, tokens, and stablecoins, so the label alone says little about rights or value. Risks can include extreme volatility, limited liquidity, custody failure, protocol defects, scams, market manipulation, and uncertain legal treatment. Regulatory classification and consumer protections depend on the asset, activity, intermediary, and jurisdiction rather than on the technology name.

Risk context

Cryptoassets can lose all or most of their value, and transfers or custody failures may offer limited avenues for recovery.
