Trading glossaryReviewed 16 July 2026

Definition

Settlement is the process that completes a transaction’s contractual exchange of money, assets, or ledger entitlements after execution or approval.

In market context

Execution and settlement are distinct: a trade can be agreed now while cash and ownership records become final later. Timing depends on product, venue, payment rail, blockchain confirmations, holidays, and operational review. Until completion, funds or assets may be reserved or unavailable, and a displayed completed request should be distinguished from the time an external bank or network makes value usable.
